FGCU Spirit Program Names 2010-11 Small Coed Cheerleading Team

FORT MYERS, Fla. – With the new season comes a new chapter in the Eagles’ athletic program history. The FGCU Small Coed Cheerleading team is high-kicking and basket-tossing their season off to a fast start.

Coaches Joyce Prive’ and Tara Bencomo have selected both new and old faces to create the notable team. Along with meeting the requirements for tryouts, the team has full team tumbling ability with a minimum of a back handspring all the way up to full twisting layouts.

For the first time in FGCU Cheerleading history, the team has four males and with that comes an increase in stunting ability. Look for the cheerleaders to be leading the crowd through traditional sideline cheers at basketball games, performing entertaining halftime routines, doing exhibitions throughout the state, getting involved in various community service projects and supporting FGCU athletics.

The team has been through a vigorous weekend of camp learning new routines and cheers to prepare them for the upcoming season. After the first handfuls of practices the team has proven they are ready to try new challenges and put their teamwork to the test.

The FGCU cheerleading team is coed and made up of 26 athletes. They are present at all men’s and women’s home basketball games, select away games and other FGCU sporting events.

Practices days will be determined by the time of tryouts and will include 2-3 evening per week at FGCU or Top Gun of SWFL. One practice per week will include a coed stunting/tumbling focus. Keep in mind that basketball games fall on various weeknights as well as weekends. If possible, all night classes should be avoided. Cheerleaders are expected to attend any basketball games that fall over school breaks.

As a team we compete and perform exhibitions throughout the state and participate in events throughout the community. Members are required to be full-time FGCU students and maintain a 2.0 GPA. We currently provide partial scholarships to 4th year athletes.
