The health of every student athlete at Florida Gulf Coast University is the primary concern of the FGCU Sports Medicine-Athletic Training staff, a group that covers every facet of comprehensive healthcare.

Michael Estes, MS, ATC, LAT, under the medical supervision of Head Team Physician Dr. James Guerra, directs the FGCU Sports Medicine-Athletic Training Staff. This is a group of healthcare professionals that offers the most comprehensive health care with a special emphasis placed on injury prevention (Prehab) methods. The sports medicine-athletic training staff offers daily services and care for all FGCU intercollegiate student-athletes.

Estes was promoted to Associate Athletic Director for Health Performance by current AD Ken Kavanagh, following three years as the Eagles Assistant Athletic Director and Head Athletic Trainer. In addition to directing the FGCU Sports Medicine-Athletic Training Staff, Estes serves as on the department's executive staff, is the Sports Coordinator for FGCU Men’s and Women’s Tennis and Men's and Women's Golf, and also supervises the strength & conditioning program.

Estes, who is in his 12th year as an Eagle, has been with FGCU since 2001 through a partnership with Naples Community Hospital where he served as their Athletic Training Coordinator overseeing the NCH Sports Medicine Outreach Program in the Collier County Public Schools in addition to establishing the sports medicine healthcare delivery system for FGCU student-athletes. He is one of the few remaining early pioneers of FGCU Athletics.

Estes, a graduate of Wright State University, received his Master’s degree in athletic training from Indiana State University. Prior to joining FGCU and Naples Community Hospital, he served as the director of sports medicine services at inMotion Rehabilitation in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Estes has served as the head athletic trainer at the University of South Florida, Manatee High School and Kentucky Wesleyan College where he was the athletic trainer for the NCAA Division II national championship men’s basketball team in 1990. In addition to his athletic training experience, Estes served as the associate athletic trainer for the Manatee Community College JUCO World Series runner-up team in 2002, staff athletic trainer for the 1999 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Final Four, the 1999 Outback Bowl and the 1998 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Regional. Estes was named the College/University athletic trainer of the year in the state of Florida for 1999 by the Athletic Trainers’ Association of Florida. He also received the “Backbone Award” from the Athletic Trainers’ Association of Florida in 1997. Estes also teaches as an adjunct professor in the College of Health Professions here at FGCU.

Estes, and his wife Tracy have two children, Dylan (18) who is a freshman at Edison State College and Monica (20) who is a sophomore at FGCU.
