Assistant Athletic Trainer Joe Whetstone, ATC, LAT, CES is in his fifth year at Florida Gulf Coast University. He works primarily with the Eagle's baseball team, as well as the Men’s and Women’s Golf teams. He also oversees the day to day operations of the FGCU Sports Medicine-Athletic Training department. In addition, Whetstone serves as the Insurance Coordinator.
A native of New Carlisle, OH, Whetstone graduated from Wright State University (Dayton, OH) in 2008, with a Bachelor’s of Science in Education degree with a concentration in Athletic Training.
During his undergraduate years at Wright State, Whetstone was able to cover a wide variety of sports including baseball, basketball, and cross country. Joe also was able to do football internships at Wittenberg University and with the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League, as well as assist with football coverage at Tecumseh High School. He was able to dedicate many hours working as a medical volunteer at events such as the Special Olympics and the OHSAA State Cross Country Meet. He served on the Student Senate of the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers’ Association (GLATA), acting as the Winter Meeting Chair. Whetstone was also able to assist with the planning of several conferences within GLATA, as well as the Ohio Athletic Trainers’ Association.
Whetstone is an approved clinical instructor for the Athletic Training Education Program at FGCU. In this position he is able to help shape the lives of future athletic trainers. He is also able to assist with the FGCU Sports Medicine Club, as well as the Prospective Athletic Training Student program. Joe is a certified Corrective Exercise Specialist through the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
Whetstone is an active member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), Southeastern Athletic Trainers Association (SEATA), and the Athletic Trainers' Association of Florida (ATAF).
