Perry's single in the bottom of the 9th gives Eagles 4-3 win
Fort Myers – Kip Perry drilled a line drive single to left field in the bottom of the ninth to give the FGCU baseball team a 4-3 victory over Northwood tonight at Terry Park.
Jason Cooper was clutch tonight as he led off both the 7th and 9th innings with base hits to give his team the momentum it needed to catch up in the 7th, and then to win the game in the 9th.
After the Cooper single in the ninth, Keith Sommer laid down a great bunt, which he almost beat out for a base hit to move pinch runner Jesse Gill to second base.
Chris Garcia would then be intentionally walked, and was followed by Mike Howard who was hit by a pitch. This loaded the bases as Kip Perry came to bat.
Perry, who went 2-for-4 on the day while driving in 2 RBI’s, proved to step up tonight when the Eagles needed him most as he singled to left to win the game.
Freshman Ace, Jason Short started the game for the Eagles, and for the fourth straight appearance did not surrender an earned run as he went 7 innings, giving up 8 hits, and striking out 7. Short showed good composure as several times Northwood threatened the Eagles.
Chris Cahill relieved Short in the 8th inning, and was spectacular, as he would shut down Northwood, facing 7 batters, and striking out 4. The freshman flamethrower gave the Eagles the confidence they needed entering the 9th, and proved to be extremely clutch tonight. Cahill picks up his first career win tonight (1-0).
Northwood starting pitcher Jason Shone had a solid outing tonight as he went the distance, giving up 6 hits, 2 earned runs, and striking out 12 Eagle batters.
Eric McKay led Northwood offensively, going 2-for-4 with 2 RBI’s.
The Eagles (4-1) will battle Northwood tomorrow afternoon beginning at noon, as they will play a double header.
