Eagles pound out 17 hits as they defeated South Dakota 13-2

Fort Myers – Behind a solid pitching performance from Freshman Jason Short, and an outstanding offensive effort, the FGCU baseball team improved to 10-6 on the season by defeating the University of South Dakota 13-2 at Terry Park.
Freshman Jason Short gave up his first two earned runs of the season, but was dominant as he went 7 innings, giving up 4 hits, and striking out 4.
Eric Jordan and Chris Cahill came in and pitched one inning each, as they shut out USD, by not giving up a hit, and striking out one batter each.
Offensively, the Eagles pounded out 17 hits as Freshman Kip Perry and Junior David Cox led the way. Perry went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI’s and 1 run scored, while Cox went 3-for-5 with 3 RBI’s.
Freshman center fielder Travis Cunningham had a solid performance as he went 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored.
David Alexander and Mike Howard each had 2 hits as Howard went 2-for-5 with 3 runs scored and 1 RBI. Alexander went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI’s and a run scored.
Junior Chris Garcia, who is leading the team in batting average (.429 6-14) went 2-for-3, scoring 1 run in the win.
FGCU will take on Point Park this Saturday morning, as they will play a double-header beginning at 8:30 a.m. The game will be played at Estero High School.
