FGCU baseball holds on for 11-8 win

Fort Myers- The FGCU baseball team improved to 14-7 as they defeated Stonehill College 11-8.

The Eagles jumped out to a 10-1 lead through seven innings before Stonehill scored six runs in the top of the eighth to cut the lead to 10-7.

The Eagles got a run back in the bottom of the eighth, and Stonehill would get another run in the top of the ninth as Freshman Chris Hassen would shut the door earning his first career save.

Chris Brown and Jason Cooper combined for eight hits a piece in leading the Eagles over Stonehill. Brown, who is now hitting .400, went 4-for-5 including two doubles as he scored three runs and knocked in one. Cooper went 4-for-5, knocking in three runs, and scoring a pair. Cooper earned a double as well as his first career triple as well, and is now hitting .362 on the year.

Freshman Joey Tolisano blasted his third homer of the year as he went 3-for-4 with four RBI’s and a run scored. Tolisano is now hitting .343, and leads the team in home runs.

Freshman ace Jason Short started today’s contest, and he earned his third win of the year going seven innings giving up one earned run and striking out nine. The Eagle defense did not help him too much as they committed seven errors, which led to the majority of the runs scored.

Eric Jordan pitched one inning of relief, and was solid as he did not allow a hit, and struck out one.

Freshman Chris Hassen earned his first career save as he pitched the ninth, and struck out two in closing the game out.

The Eagles will battle Lock Haven Friday in a double-header beginning at 4:00 p.m.
