Brown, Eagles sweep Mount Mercy

Fort Myers – The FGCU baseball team swept Mount Mercy College (IA) today 6-3, and 10-7, improving their record to 22-7-1.

Junior first basemen, Chris Brown dominated today, as he went a combined 7-for-8 with 6 RBI’s, 1 run scored, and 4 doubles. Brown, who is now hitting .462 on the season, leads the team in hits (49) and RBI’s (36).

In the first game, freshman hurler Chris Hassen continued to improve as he pitched his third complete game of the season, striking out 10, while not allowing an earned run. Hassen improves his record to 7-1, which leads the team in wins.

Offensively, Chris Brown went a perfect 3-for-3 with a RBI while every Eagle except for one earned a hit.

David Cox went 1-for-4 with a RBI as Jason Cooper went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI.

Freshman Joey Tolisano went 1-for-3 with a run scored and Mike Howard went 1-for-2 with a run scored.

Junior catcher Billy Corrigan, who is now hitting .364 went 2-for-3 with a RBI to help lead the Eagles to their 21st win of the season.

In the second game, the Eagles pounded out 18 hits led by Chris Brown’s 4-for-5 performance with 5 RBI’s.

Freshman shortstop Rene Ruiz had a big game going 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored including his second double of the year.

Kip Perry, who leads the team in on base percentage at an impressive .513, went 2-for-5 with 2 RBI’s and a run scored.

Joey Tolisano, Chad Kennedy, and Mike Howard all had two-hit games as Tolisano had 2 RBI’s and Kennedy had 1 RBI. Howard, who leads the team in runs scored, (31) scored twice in the win.

On the mound, Freshman Chris Cahill started his fourth game of the season, but struggled with control as he only went one and two-thirds innings, walking six and striking out two.

Tony Korson came in relief, as he would pitch the rest of the game, and earned his third win of the season (3-2). Korson gave up six hits, three earned runs, and struck out a batter.

The Eagles improve to 22-7-1.
