Eagles earn tie in rematch with Barry

Miami Shores, FL – The FGCU baseball team earned their second tie of the season last night in a rematch with Barry University 11-11. The game was called after thirteen innings of play due to time regulations.

The Eagles showed a lot of composure as they were down 11-9 going into the top of the ninth inning.

Junior catcher Billy Corrigan got things going in the bottom of the ninth as he reached on a throwing error from the Barry third basemen.

Freshman lead off hitter Kip “Nails” Perry delivered another clutch hit as he singled to left field, moving Corrigan to second.

Freshman shortstop Rene Ruiz would then reach on a throwing error by the first baseman on a sacrifice bunt attempt to load the bases.

Freshman slugger Jason Cooper then came up, but grounded out into a double play, scoring Corrigan to cut the lead to 11-10.

Chris Brown then hit a clutch single as he as all season, scoring Perry to tie the game at 11.

After Mike Howard struck out to end the inning, Freshman Jason Short entered the game to pitch for the Eagles and shut Barry down as he went three innings, surrendered 4 hits, and struck out 3.

Barry threatened in the bottom of the eleventh as junior left fielder David Cox threw out two runners at home plate that would have won the game for Barry. Cox, who leads all out fielder in assists with 4, came up huge with his clutch defensive plays.

Pete Stelzer came in to pitch the final two innings for the Eagles as he gave up just 1 hit, and struck out a batter to end the game in a 1-1 tie.

Junior Chris Brown led the Eagles offensively once again, as the slugger went 4-for-7, including a game- tying hit in the ninth. Brown scored three runs and had an RBI as he stole his team leading thirteenth base of the season.

David Cox went 3-for-5 with 2 RBI, and Kip Perry went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and RBI to lead the Eagles.

The Eagles are now 29-9-2 and will play a three game series against Florida Memorial this weekend at City of Palms Park.
