FGCU sweeps doubleheader from Clearwater Christian College
Fort Myers, FL - The FGCU baseball team is now 3-0 on the season after winning both ends of a doubleheader against Clearwater Christian College 18-5 and 11-0.
During the first game of the doubleheader the Eagles continued their hot hitting as every starter scored at least once. However, the visiting Cougars kept the game close going into the third inning before the Eagle offense took over and never looked back.
In the inning FGCU scored six runs highlighted by Freshman leftfielder Travis Parrott’s two run single and senior centerfielder Mike Howard’s two run double. For the game Parrott went 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 3 runs batted in. By the end of the day he would see his batting average climb to .636 with a team leading 7 hits through the team’s first three games. Sophomores Jason Cooper, Rene Ruiz, and Michael Matthews also contributed to the win with 2 hits a piece.
Picking up his first college win for FGCU was Freshman right-hander Willie Edge, a product of nearby Estero High School.
Leading the way for the Cougars were first baseman Andrew Stenberg and third baseman Jay Jankowski. They both went 2 for 3 from the plate while scoring three runs and driving in two runs, respectively. Taking the loss for Clearwater Christian was right-hander Jonathan Domico.
The Eagles then picked up right where they left off for the second game, but this time it was behind the dominate pitching performance of junior left-hander Ryan Williams. Williams overpowered the Cougars and struck out 9 in the 5 inning game that was stopped short due the 10 run mercy rule. He only gave up one hit as he notched his first win of the season. Offensively, the Eagles were led by the slugging combo of sophomore catcher Jason Cooper and junior Adam Masino. Cooper continues to sizzle at the plate, this time with two homeruns and three runs batted in. Through three games Cooper is hitting .545 with three home runs and 10 runs batted in. Hitting in the cleanup spot, Masino went 2 for 3 with a double and 2 runs batted in.
The only hit the Cougars could muster against Williams was a triple by Jay Jankowski to lead off the fourth inning. He of course was stranded after a pair of strikeouts and a pop out, thus ending the Cougars only legitimate scoring opportunity all game. Picking up the loss for Clearwater Christian was right-hander Chip Parker.
The Eagles (3-0) will play at Northwood University on Friday starting at 2:30 pm.
