Eagles Win 4-1 Behind Chris Hassen
Fort Myers, FL - The FGCU Eagles Baseball team went to 16-5 on the season as they defeated Augustana College 4-1 Sunday night.
The star of the game for the Eagles was starting pitcher Chris Hassen. Hassen (2-2) threw a complete game and gave up only one run on four hits while striking out eight. Deep in the game he was still flirting with some sacred baseball accomplishments. First off he had a perfect game through six and one third innings when he walked center fielder Jake Vroman. Vroman was then stranded when Hassen got the next two hitters to fly out to center and strike out looking.
Hassen’s bid for the team’s second no-hitter of the season was still alive but unfortunately it was broken up in the next inning when he gave up a one out single to second baseman Chris Nelson. The Vikings attempted to rally as pitch hitter Jim Lohman then ripped the first pitch he saw to right center giving them runners on first and third with only one out. As he had done all night, Hassen responded by getting two weak fly balls to end the inning.
The Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the fourth behind a two out RBI single by sophomore Derek Mollica. Mollica drove in freshman Travis Parrott who had earlier led off the inning with a bunt single.
FGCU would eventually blow the game open in the bottom of the eighth inning behind extraordinary offensive execution. Senior Chris Brown led off the inning with a single through the left side and after two quick outs, Junior Adam Masino walked to give the Eagles runners on first and second with two outs. As Brown was attempting to steal third base, Mollica struck out swinging but as the ball got away from the catcher Mollica was safe at first, Masino moved up to third base, and Brown came all away around to score. Masino then scored as ball four to Michael Mathews got away from the catcher. The Eagles were now left with runners on first and third and the Eagles took advantage of the situation. As the pitcher attempted to pick off Mathews at first, pinch runner Mike Howard broke for the plate and dove in safely to make the score 4-0.
Taking the loss for the Vikings was starting pitcher Matt Blankenship. He gave up one run on five hits through sox innings of work while striking out five.
The Eagles (16-5) will play vs. St. Anslem College on Tuesday starting at 4:00 pm.
