Ryan Williams leads Eagles over Warriors 11-0
Fort Myers, FL – On a chilly night the Eagles crushed the Warriors of East Stroudsburg University behind the dominant pitching of Ryan Williams and a solid team effort at the plate.
After two quick shutout innings the Eagles jumped out big with a four run inning in the third behind four hits and a walk. First baseman Mike Mathews led off the inning with a sharp single to right that scooted past the right fielder letting Mathews reach third base. After a pop out, shortstop Rene Ruiz laced a single to left that scored Mathews for the first run of the inning. Third baseman Chris Brown followed with a double to left center to give the Eagles runners on second and third. Jason Cooper then drove a fly ball to left field that scored Ruiz and advanced Brown to third. After left fielder Travis Parrott walked, designated hitter Adam Masino came up clutch with a two out single to left that scored Brown and Parrott and made the score 4-0.
With the score 5-0 the Eagles put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth with a five spot that made the score 10-0. Cooper led off with a bloop double down the left field line and Parrot drove him in with a triple to deep right center field. The next two batters walked and Florin drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to make the score 7-0. After recording the second out of the inning the next two batters got free passes via a hit by pitch and a walk. The walk to Ruiz scored Masino who had walked earlier in the inning. An error by the third baseman scored two more runs to make the score 10-0.
Putting in a solid, if not overpowering pitching performance was Eagle starter Ryan Williams. Williams (4-2) pitched six innings and gave up no runs on three hits while striking out eight.
Taking the loss for the Warriors was starting pitcher Jeff Lazowski. He went three innings and gave up four runs on four hits while striking out two.
Leading the way for FGCU offensively was Mathews and Parrott. Mathews went 2 for 4 with one run scored and one run batted in. Parrott finished two for three with three runs scored, a double, and a triple.
The Eagles (18-8) will play Friday vs. Lynn University starting at 7:00 pm.
