Phillips leads Eagles 14-4
Fort Myers, FL – The Eagles got another excellent pitching performance from Junior Billy Phillips and the offense heated up after a slow start to earn a 14-4 victory over Lynn University. The Eagles are now 19-8 on the season.
Junior starter Billy Phillips continued his string of quality pitching performances with six and two thirds innings of work to earn his fourth win of the season. Phillips (4-1) gave up three runs on nine hits while striking out eight.
Junior Clint Montgomery picked up his first save of the year working one and one third innings while striking out three.
After hitting the ball hard for three innings FGCU got on the board in the fourth thanks to three walks and an error on a failed pickoff attempt. With two outs and Jason Cooper on base, Chris Brown, Kip Perry, and Adam Masino all drew walks. Masino’s walk scored Cooper from third to make the score 1-0. Lynn pitcher Raymond Levya then attempted to pick Perry off second but the ball got away from second baseman Beau McMillan and Brown scored from third base for the second run of the inning.
The Eagles started right where they left off in the next inning. Centerfielder Mike Howard led off the inning with a beautifully placed bunt single down the third base line. Right fielder Travis Cunningham followed with a walk and set the table for the meat of the order. Sophomore Rene Ruiz bunted the ball back to the pitcher and Levya threw the ball away trying to force Howard at third. Howard walked in to score and the runners moved up to second and third. Cooper then laced a double down the leftfield line that scored two and chased Levya from the ballgame.
After reliever Aaron Miller got two quick strike outs, the Eagles kept the rally going as Perry got hit by a pitch and Masino walked to once again load the bases. First baseman Mike Mathews fought through a long battle with Miller to single up the middle and score two more runs and make the score 7-0.
After the Knights narrowed the gap to 8-4 the Eagles put up a six spot in the eighth to put the game out of reach with a 14-4 lead. The big blow in the inning was a bases clearing double off the bat of Mike Mathews. For the game Mathews was 2 for 5 with five runs batted in.
Leading the way offensively for the Eagles were Howard and Cooper. Howard finished the game 3 for 5 with one run scored and two runs batted in and Cooper was 2 for 5 with three runs scored and two runs batted in.
Taking the loss for the Knights was Levya. He pitched four innings and gave up six runs, four earned, on five hits while striking out two.
The Eagles (19-8) will play a doubleheader Saturday vs. Lynn starting at 1:00 pm.
