FGCU takes two from William Woods

Fort Myers, FL – The FGCU Eagles overmatched William Woods University and took both ends of a doubleheader 11-2 and 6-2, respectively. The Eagles are now 27-11 on the season. The Eagles got the scoring started in the first inning via two hits and a stolen base. With one out, second baseman Kip Perry singled sharply to right field, but was forced at second on a Chris Brown groundball. Brown then stole second base to get in scoring position and Jason Cooper drove him in with a single up the middle. In the top of the fourth the Owls would put together a rally of their own to even the score at one. Trevor York and Jerrod Spears led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Eagles pitcher Drew Phillips then threw away a pick off attempt that advanced the runners to second and third. The run then scored on a ball four wild pitch to Nic Lantz. Luckily for the Eagles, Phillips was able to pitch out of the jam and escape, only giving up the one run. FGCU broke the game open and eventually ended it in the bottom of the fifth with a 10 run inning that triggered the 10 run mercy rule. Derek Mollica and Pat Stubbe led off eith back-to-back singles. Travis Cunningham then bunted both of the runners over to second and third. The Eagles then put together five straight base hits highlighted by a two run Adam Masino double to deep left center. Masino then scored on an error by the shortstop to make the score 8-1. Travis Cunningham then ended it with a three run homer to left that made the score 11-1. Picking up his first collegiate win for the Eagles was starting pitcher Drew Phillips. Phillips (1-0) threw five innings and gave up one run on two hits while striking out five. Leading the way for the Eagles offensively was Adam Masino, Kip Perry, and Jason Cooper. Adam Masino was 3 for 3 with one run scored and two runs batted in. Perry and Cooper had two hits apiece. In the second game the Eagle offense stayed hot in the early innings. After going down 2-1, they put up a four spot in the bottom of the third to make the score 5-2. With one out Travis Cunningham reached on a walk. Kip Perry and Chris Brown then got back-to-back singles. Brown’s single scored Cunningham from second to tie the score at 2. After Jason Cooper reached on a error by the first baseman, Mike Howard cleared the bases with a two strike double that made the score 5-2. Getting the win for FGCU was starting pitcher Troy Beall. Beall (3-1) went five innings and gave up two runs on four hits while striking out five. Leading the way for the Eagles offensively was Mike Howard. Howard finished the game 1 for 3 with a three run double . The Eagles (27-11) will play a doubleheader Saturday @ Florida Southern starting at noon.
