Eagles Baseball Sweeps Saint Leo in Doubleheader
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University extended its winning streak to four games by sweeping a doubleheader from Saint Leo University, 3-2 and 4-2, at the FGCU Baseball Complex on Saturday afternoon.
FGCU had just 11 hits in the two games, but benefited from a pair of strong outings by its starting pitchers.
In the nightcap, senior right-hander Billy Phillips (New Port Richey, FL) improved to 2-1 by scattering four singles while striking out seven and walking just one batter in his second complete game this spring.
The Eagles scored all four runs in the second inning, highlighted by RBI singles from sophomore Derek Mollica (Boca Raton, FL), second baseman Pat Stubbe (Naples, FL) and a two-run double by junior Eric Cox (Sayville, NY).
Ronald Lowe (0-3) was the hard-luck loser for Saint Leo, giving up just the three hits in the second inning.
In the first game, FGCU scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning when designated hitter Mike Matthews (Venice, FL) laced a one-out triple into the right field corner to score sophomore Eric Burns (Fort Myers, FL). Matthews and junior shortstop Jason Louwsma (Sanford, FL) had a pair of hits each to lead an eight-hit attack. Junior Ian Manson (Plano, TX) and freshman Mike Cleghorn (Jacksonville, FL) each had a double.
Junior left-hander Tony Korson (3-0) picked up the win with a perfect 1 1/3 innings in relief of starter Chris Hassen (Port Charlotte, FL). Hassen, a sophomore right-hander, allowed seven hits in 7 2/3 innings, striking out seven and walking just one. Hassen, who had a shutout going into the sixth, now has a 1.09 ERA in four starts.
FGCU continues its eight-game home stand with a single game tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. against Saginaw Valley State University of Michigan at the FGCU Baseball Complex.
