FGCU Baseball Wins 7th Straight
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University scored eight runs in the fourth inning Tuesday night and went on to post a 12-1 baseball victory over Salem-International University at the FGCU Baseball Complex.
FGCU (11-3) has now won seven straight, scoring 27 runs on 29 hits in the past two games.
The Eagles scored their first run in the second inning on a solo home run by freshman outfielder Shawn Griffin, his third of the year and second in the past two games.
In the fourth, the first seven batters reached safely for the Eagles as they went on to score eight runs in the inning on five hits, two walks and four errors, taking a commanding 9-1 lead.
Junior first baseman Mike Matthews (Venice, FL) added a RBI single in the fifth and junior shortstop Jason Louwsma (Sanford, FL) belted a two-run triple in the sixth for a 12-1 lead.
Second baseman Chris Perry (Largo, FL) went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and a RBI while Matthews was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI to pace a 14-hit attack. Junior Jason Cooper (Bradenton, FL) and freshman catcher Graig Smith (Venice, FL) added two hits apiece.
Junior lefty Tony Korson (Bethesda. MD) was effective in his first start of the season, allowing just five singles in five innings, striking out six batters and walking one to improve to a perfect 4-0.
FGCU hosts Concordia University of Minnesota on Thursday, March 3 at 7 p.m. at the FGCU Baseball Complex.
