FORT MYERS, Fla. – Sophomore right-hander Chris Hassen pitched eight strong innings as Florida Gulf Coast University upended #24 Regis University 3-1 Saturday night at the FGCU Baseball Complex. Hassen (Port Charlotte, FL) scattered seven hits in eight innings to improve to 3-0 on the season. Hassen struck out a season-high 12 batters while walking just two to lower his ERA to 1.10 in 32.2 innings this season. FGCU gave Hassen a 1-0 lead in the first when junior Chris Perry (Largo, FL) scored on an RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of sophomore Kevin Burns (Fort Myers, FL). The Eagles went up 2-0 in the fourth when Derek Mollica scored on a balk by Rangers starter Jon Parscal. Regis cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth when they reached Hassen for a walk and single to start the inning, and plated a run on back-back sacrifices. FGCU added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when senior left fielder David Cox (Sarasota, FL) doubled home freshman catcher Graig Smith (Venice, FL). Senior lefty Tony Korson (Bethesda, MD) came out of the bullpen to strike out the side in the ninth inning for his first save of the season. Junior Jason Cooper had a pair of hits to lead FGCU. Regis was led by Matt Bialas, who was 2-for-4. FGCU, which has now won a school-record nine straight games, hosts St. Joseph’s of Indiana at the FGCU Baseball Complex Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
