FGCU Baseball Wins 10th Straight
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team extended its school-record winning streak to 10 games with a 6-5 win over Saint Joseph’s of Indiana Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Baseball Complex.
Junior Pat Stubbe (Naples, FL) went 3-for-5 with a run scored and a RBI while junior Jason Louwsma (Sanford, FL) was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI to lead the Eagles. Freshman reliever Brian Mastin (Venice, FL) pitched three strong innings in relief of sophomore right-hander Jason Kiley (Palm Harbor, FL) to pick up his first collegiate win on the mound. Mastin went three innings, allowing one run on one hit. Junior closer Nick Perez (Cooper City, FL) struck out two in the ninth to record his second save.
FGCU provided Kiley with a 3-0 lead in the second on a two-run home run by freshman catcher Graig Smith (Venice, FL), his first collegiate homer, and an RBI single to center by Louwsma.
The Pumas came back to score four runs in the fifth on five hits to chase Kiley. But the Eagles responded with three more runs in the sixth. Stubbe, freshman Shawn Griffin (Hollywood, FL) and Louwsma all had RBI’s to give the Eagles a 6-4 lead. Louwsma now has a team-leading 23 RBI in 17 games to go along with a team-best .377 batting average.
The Pumas added a run on an RBI groundout off Mastin in the seventh but were shut down in order in the eighth and ninth by the Eagles bullpen.
FGCU (14-3) begins an important six-game road trip with a doubleheader against Clark Atlanta University on Tuesday afternoon at noon.
