FGCU Baseball Keeps Rolling
ALBANY, GA. – Florida Gulf Coast University was no-hit in the nightcap but still managed to pull out the win to sweep a doubleheader from Albany State University, 9-0 and 3-1, in Division II South Region baseball play Thursday afternoon.
In the second game, Albany State left-hander Brandon Griffin held the Eagles hitless over seven innings, allowing three runs and one earned run while striking out 12. However, the Rams committed two errors and Griffin hurt himself with 11 walks.
FGCU plated a pair of runs in the third inning for a 2-0 lead on four walks and an error. The Rams cut the lead to 2-1 in the sixth with a pair of hits off Eagles right-hander Jason Kiley (Palm Harbor, Fla.). The Eagles added an insurance run in the seventh on three walks and a hits batsman. Kiley then struck out the side in the seventh for his first save.
Eagles starter Tony Korson (Bethesda, MD) threw five scoreless innings, allowing a pair of hits, no runs and one walk with five strikeouts to improve to a perfect 5-0 with a 0.00 ERA.
In the opener, FGCU banged out 10 hits and scored two runs in the second and four in the third to back starter Chris Hassen (Port Charlotte, FL), who allowed just two hits and struck out four to improve to 4-0 with a 0.98 ERA this spring. Sophomore Drew Phillips (Pompano, FL) allowed one hit in a scoreless three innings of relief.
Junior second baseman Chris Perry (Largo, FL), freshman catcher Graig Smith (Venice, FL) and sophomore Derek Mollica (Boca Raton, FL) had two hits apiece for FGCU. Sophomore right fielder Kevin Burns (Fort Myers, FL) and senior center fielder David Cox (Sarasota, FL) each drove in two runs.
FGCU (20-3, 12-3 South Region) has now won 16 straight games and begins a seven-game home stand on Tuesday night against Post University (Conn.) at 7 p.m. at the FGCU Baseball Complex.
