FGCU Baseball Sweeps Saint Rose

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team held the College of Saint Rose to just nine hits in two games to sweep a doubleheader, 3-0 and 15-0, at the FGCU Baseball Complex Monday evening. In the opener, senior right-hander Billy Phillips (New Port Richey, FL) pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out six to improve his record to 5-1 on the year. Freshman righty J.J. Crumbly pitched the final two innings for his second save. The Eagles scored all three runs in the second on a RBI double to center field by sophomore Kevin Burns (Fort Myers) that scored senior David Cox (Sarasota, FL), and a one-out two-run double from freshman outfielder Shawn Griffin (Hollywood, FL), who went 3-for-3, for a 3-0 lead. In the nightcap, sophomore right-hander Chris Hassen (Port Charlotte, FL) tossed four shutout innings, giving up just two hits while striking out two without a walk to improve to 6-0. FGCU scored two in the second, four in the third and two in the fourth to stake Hassen to an 8-0 lead. The Eagles added seven runs in the sixth. Junior shortstop Jason Louwsma (Sanford, FL) led the 16-hit attack, going 4-for-5 with two home runs, including his second grand slam of the season, three runs scored and five RBI. Burns was 3-for-4 with three runs scored while junior Jason Cooper, who blasted his first homer of the spring, and Cox had two hits each. Freshman Mike Cleghorn (Jacksonville, FL) hit his third home run of the year. FGCU, winners of 20 of its last 21 games, hosts Saint Rose again Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. in the finale of a seven-game home stand.
