FGCU Falls to #6 Florida Southern 2-1

LAKELAND, Fla. - Fred Popp's one-out single in the bottom of the eighth scored Nick Diyorio with the go-ahead run and sixth-ranked Florida Southern edged Florida Gulf Coast 2-1 in South Region action on Friday night at Henley Field. Diyorio had led off the inning with a triple to left center. After Matt Mercurio popped out to the shortstop, Popp lined a single to center for his third hit of the game. The win improved the Moccasins' record to 23-4. Florida Gulf Coast, which had won 22 of its last 23, slipped to 26-5. The Eagles had scored first, when junior shortstop Jason Louwsma (Sanford,FL) led off the fourth with a single and scored on junior Jason Cooper's (Bradenton, FL) double. The Moccasins came right back to tie it in the bottom of the inning. when Popp led off with a single and Geoff Strickland tripled him home with one out. Dan Albritton pitched the first eight innings to earn his fifth win of the season for the Mocs. He allowed just two other base runners after the Eagles scored their fourth inning run. Kyle Deyoung worked the ninth to record his eighth save. A two-out walk to senior center fielder David Cox (Sarasota, FL) gave the Eagles a chance, but sophomore right fielder Kevin Burns (Fort Myers) bounced out to third to end the game. Senior right-hander Billy Phillips (5-2) went the distance for the Eagles, striking out seven and walking just one. The two teams play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday at Henley Field.
