FGCU Baseball Routs Benedict
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Florida Gulf Coast University pounded five Benedict College pitchers for 23 runs and 25 hits Wednesday, and went on to beat Benedict 23-5 in the finale of a three-game Division II south region series at Bomber Field.
The Eagles (29-7 overall, 15-6 south region) scored in four of the first six innings to score 20 plus runs for the second time in two days. Benedict got on the scoreboard with single runs in the second, third and seventh innings, plus two runs in the fifth.
Senior David Cox, who hit .500 in the series, went 4-for-6 to lead the Eagles, including his team-leading 14th double and fifth home run, with three runs scored and four RBI. Junior Jason Louwsma also had four hits, while freshman Graig Smith, junior Ian Manson and junior Jason Cooper, who has hit safely in 12 straight, had three hits apiece. Nine players had at least two hits each for the Eagles.
Junior right-hander Jason Short (1-0) picked up the win with four innings in relief of senior left-hander Ryan Williams, who made his first start of the season after returning from a pre-season injury. Junior right-hander Troy Beall pitched the final three innings, allowing just one run on two hits while recording four strikeouts.
The Eagles travel to Fort Lauderdale on Friday, April 1 to begin a key three-game series against 15th-ranked Nova Southeastern.
