FGCU Baseball Loses to Nova in 10th Inning

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The # 15 ranked Nova Southeastern University baseball team defeated the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles on Friday evening by a 6-5 score in 10 innings at the NSU Baseball Complex. A walk-off homerun over the right field fence by Knights right fielder Greg Burrows in the 10th inning gave NSU their 11th win in their last 12 games. Burroughs’ blast was his fourth round tripper of the season, as he led a 16-hit NSU attack by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Knights’ right-hander Nick Carris picked up the win and improved to 3-0 with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Junior third baseman Ian Manson and junior designated hitter Mike Matthews each hit solo homeruns for the Eagles, while junior shortstop Jason Louwsma was 3-for-5 with an RBI and junior first baseman Jason Cooper went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Eagles’ sophomore Jason Kiley (3-1) took the loss in relief. Nova third baseman Mike Pellerito went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored, Alex Froloff was 3-for-5, and Sean McFadden was 2-for-4. Senior right-hander Kyle Ruwe fanned three, scattered nine hits and allowed just two earned runs over 7 1/3 innings of work. FGCU Starter Billy Phillips pitched seven innings and allowed four earned runs, but did not factor in the decision. FGCU falls to 29-8. Nova Southeastern improves to 23-9. The same two teams square off for a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the NSU Baseball Complex.
