FGCU Baseball Pulls Out Win in Ninth over Barry
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Junior catcher Jason Cooper laced a two-out RBI single to right field to highlight a two-run ninth inning as Florida Gulf Coast University pulled out a 6-5 win over Barry University Sunday afternoon at Swanson Stadium.
The Eagles overcame an early 4-0 deficit to pull out the rubber game of the series and improve to 34-12 on the season. The Bucs fell to 25-19.
Barry took a 3-0 lead in the third inning off FGCU starter Jason Short (Naples, Fla.). First baseman Fausto Faraldo had an RBI single and scored on a two-run homer by catcher Ricky Sanchez.
The Bucs added an unearned run off Eagles freshman reliever Brian Mastin (Venice, Fla.) in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead.
However, the Eagles came back to score four runs on two hits and three Bucs errors in the sixth inning to tie the game at 4-4. Sophomore Derek Mollica (Boca Raton, Fla.) had a key two-out, two-run double to highlight the rally.
Barry regained the lead in the seventh without the benefit of a hit Faraldo scored on an infield error to make it 5-4. It remained that way until the ninth as Bucs reliever Ray Rhoads came on in the seventh to retire the first five Eagles hitters he faced.
Mollica led off the FGCU ninth with a single to left and moved to third on a single by pinch hitter Chris Perry (Largo, Fla.) that chased Rhoads. Freshman closer Eric Horstmann came on to strike out pinch hitter Kevin Burns (Fort Myers, Fla.) and freshman outfielder Shawn Griffin (Hollywood, Fla.) for two quick outs. Junior shortstop Jason Louwsma (Sanford, Fla.) then lined a single to right field to score Mollica to tie the game at 5-5 before Cooper (Bradenton, Fla.) drove in Perry with the game-winner.
Junior right-hander Troy Beall (Kissimmee, Fla.), the fourth Eagles pitcher, improved to 2-0 with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief. Hortsmann dropped to 0-2.
Mollica finished 3-for-4 to lead the Eagles nine-hit attack. Cooper and Louwsma had two hits apiece. Sanchez went 4-for-4 with two RBI for the Bucs.
FGCU is home again on Tuesday when they complete a suspended game with Florida Tech at 4 p.m. followed by the regularly scheduled contest.
