No. 25 Baseball Team Sweeps Doubleheader
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University pitchers combined for 26 strikeouts and allowed just two hits as the No. 25 Eagles swept a doubleheader Saturday from Albany State in Division II South Region baseball action, 2-0 and 6-0, at Swanson Stadium.
Junior right-handers Jason Kiley and Robby Rotunno combined for a no-hitter for as FGCU won the opener. Kiley (Palm Harbor, Fla.) pitched the first six innings, striking out 11 and walking just two to win his first start. Rotunno (Sanford, Fla.) struck out two batters in a perfect seventh inning to record his first career save.
The Eagles were held to just two hits by Rams starter Brandon Griffin (0-1), who struck out seven and walked three. FGCU gave Kiley all the support he needed in the bottom of the first on a RBI groundout by junior outfielder Geoff Rottmayer (Clearwater, Fla.). The Eagles added an insurance run in the sixth on a solo home run by sophomore first baseman Mike Cleghorn (Jacksonville, Fla.), his first of the season. Their only other base hit was a leadoff single by freshman centerfielder Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) in the first.
In the nightcap, FGCU scratched out just five hits and took advantage of three errors for the 6-0 shutout. Junior right-hander Justin Stiver (Englewood, Fla.) tossed six shutout innings, allowing just two singles and two walks while striking out 11 to earn his first college win. Junior right hander Matt Laliberte (New Port Richey, Fla.) struck out two of the three batters he faced in the seventh.
FGCU jumped ahead 3-0 in the third. The Eagles loaded the bases on a hit batsman, walk and infield error, scoring their first run on a passed ball. Upchurch drive home the other two runs with a sharp single to right field. They added a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by senior Ian Manson (Plano, Texas) and two runs in the sixth on back-to-back RBI doubles from Cleghorn and senior Jason Louwsma (Sanford, Fla.).
The teams close out their three-game series on Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
