Eagles Baseball Rallies Past Tritons 7-6

VALDOSTA, GA. – Florida Gulf Coast University rallied for two runs in the eighth inning to pull out a 7-6 win over Eckerd College in an NCAA Division II South Region game held at Valdosta State on Sunday afternoon. FGCU began its rally with two outs. Freshman Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) singled to right field and moved to second after a walk to junior Travis Cunningham (Coral Springs, Fla.). Senior Jason Louwsma followed with a single off the second baseman Matt Abraham’s glove to score Upchurch with the tying run. After sophomore Mike Cleghorn (Jacksonville, Fla.) drew a walk, junior Derek Mollica (Boca Raton, Fla.) greeted Tritons reliever Pat Feehan with a single to right field for the eventual game-winner. Junior right-hander Justin Stiver (Englewood, Fla.), the fourth Eagles pitcher, picked up his second win of the year for FGCU after allowing just one hit and striking out four in three strong innings of relief. Senior right-hander Troy Beall also tossed two innings of scoreless relief out of the FGCU bullpen. Upchurch, Louwsma and Mollica each had two hits apiece to lead an eight-hit attack for FGCU. Louwsma and Cunningham had two RBI each. FGCU (5-2 overall, 5-0 South Region) returns to action on February 16 with a south regional tilt at Swanson Stadium against Barry University at 7 p.m.
