Baseball Team Sweeps No. 20 Florida Southern
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team scored in its final at-bat in both games to sweep a doubleheader from No. 20 Florida Southern in NCAA Division II South Region baseball action Saturday afternoon at Swanson Stadium.
The Eagles pulled out an 11-10 win in 10 innings in the first game before rallying for three runs in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-4 win in game two. FGCU, which has now won nine of its last 11 games, improves to 13-4 overall, 13-2 in the region. Florida Southern, the defending national champion, falls to 13-8. All three games in the series were decided by one run.
In the opener sophomore Shawn Griffin (Hollywood, Fla.) hit a two-out, pinch-hit triple to score senior Jason Louwsma (Sanford, Fla.) with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th. The Eagles held an early 6-0 lead in the game before the Mocs rallied for six runs in the third. FGCU answered with two runs in the third and fourth innings for a 10-6 lead. Florida Southern rallied to tie the game with two runs in the top of the ninth to send the game into extra innings.
Sophomore Mike Cleghorn (Jacksonville, Fla.) led the Eagles 15-hit attack with three hits while Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.), Travis Cunningham (Coral Springs, Fla.) and Louwsma had two hits each. Cunningham and Cleghorn had two RBI each. Third baseman Alexy Hernandez went 3-for-5 with three RBI to lead the Mocs.
Junior Robby Rotunno (Sanford, Fla.) picked up the win with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief for the Eagles for his first career win. Andy Polk (2-2), the third Mocs’ pitcher took the loss.
In the second game, senior Ian Manson (Plano, Texas) belted a two-out, two run double to right centerfield to cap a three run rally for the Eagles in the bottom of the seventh. A pair of errors and a walk loaded the bases. The Eagles cut the Mocs’ lead to 4-3 on a fielder’s choice before Manson delivered the game-winning hit. Upchurch and freshman Patrick Garrido (West Palm Beach, Fla.) each had two hits for the Eagles. Louwsma had two RBI.
Senior Troy Beall (Kissimmee, Fla.) pitched a perfect seventh inning in relief of freshman right-hander Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.) to pick up his first win. Coleman scattered seven hits and struck out five in six innings of work. Brett Robinson (1-1) took the loss in relief of All-American Joe Walczak.
The Eagles travel to Albany State for a 1:00 pm doubleheader on Tuesday.
