FGCU Baseball Teams Wins 5th Straight

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Freshmen Casey Coleman and Richard Bleier combined on a four-hitter to pace No. 23 Florida Gulf Coast University to a 7-1 win over the University of Missouri – St. Louis Thursday night at Swanson Stadium. The win was the fifth straight for the Eagles and their eighth win in the last nine games. Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.), a right-hander, allowed two hits and one unearned run while striking out six batters over the first six innings to improve to 2-0. The left-hander Bleier came on to hold the Rivermen scoreless on two hits over the final three innings for his first save. For the fourth straight game, FGCU jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning. Senior DH Ian Manson (Plano, Texas) tripled home senior third baseman Jason Louwsma (Sanford, Fla.) and scored on an RBI single to right field by sophomore outfielder Shawn Griffin (Hollywood, Fla.) for a 2-0 lead. The Eagles increased their lead to 4-0 in the second on a two-run triple by freshman outfielder Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.), who drove in a career-high four runs. FGCU tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning and added a single run in the eighth. Manson paced an eight-hit attack with three extra base hits for the Eagles (19-5). Lowsma had his 11-game hitting streak snapped for FGCU. Outfielder Jeff Luksza had two singles for the Rivermen. Right-hander Mark Sanders took the loss on the mound for UMSL, allowing six runs and all eight hits in seven innings. FGCU continues its eight-game home stand with a 7 p.m. game against Slippery Rock University on Friday night at Swanson Stadium.
