Eagles Baseball Runs Win Streak to 12 Straight
ATLANTA, GA. - The No. 15 Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team improved its winning streak to 12 games with a doubleheader sweep of Morehouse College, 5-1 and 15-1, in Division II South Region baseball action at Perkerson Park Tuesday afternoon.
In game two, FGCU scored 10 or more runs for the fifth time in six games with the 15-1 win. The Eagles pounded out 16 hits as 11 players recorded a base hit. Five players had at least two hits. The Eagles scored six runs in the second, one run in the third, and eight more in the fourth inning.
Senior Jason Louwsma (Sanford, Fla.) had three RBI, including a long two-run home run in the second inning. In the fourth inning, junior Michael Yates (West Palm Beach, Fla.) belted a grand slam, his first collegiate homer, and junior Geoff Rottmayer (Clearwater, Fla.) followed with a solo home run, his team-leading seventh. Sophomore Graig Smith (Venice, Fla.) had two doubles and two RBI while freshman Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.) had two hits, including a two-run triple.
Sophomore right-hander JJ Crumbley (Tampa, Fla.) pitched three scoreless innings to improve to 3-0.
In the first game, freshman outfielder Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored while Louwsma and Ian Manson (Plano, Texas) had two hits and two RBI each to lead the Eagles to the 5-1 win.
FGCU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third on an RBI double by Louwsma, who then scored on an RBI single by Manson. Morehouse answered with a run in the bottom of inning off Eagles left-hander Ryan Williams (Estero, Fla.) to make it 2-1.
But the Eagles would push across single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh inning for the win. Williams (2-1) pitched the first four innings, allowing a run on just two hits while striking out seven. Coleman pitched three scoreless innings to record his second save.
FGCU (26-5 overall, 18-3 South Region) will host the top-ranked University of Tampa (26-4) at Swanson Stadium in a three-game series beginning Friday night at 7 p.m.
