FGCU Baseball Slips Past Palm Beach Atlantic
LAKE WORTH, Fla. – Senior left-hander Ryan Williams and sophomore right-hander JJ Crumbley combined on a six-hitter to lead No. 26 Florida Gulf Coast University to a 3-2 win Wednesday night over Palm Beach Atlantic in Division II South Region baseball action.
Williams (Estero, Fla.) scattered five hits, allowing two runs, in 7.2 innings to improve to 3-1 on the year. Crumbley (Tampa, Fla.) gave up a hit and a run over the final 1.1 innings to earn his first save.
Three Sailfish pitchers held the Eagles to just four hits, but FGCU pulled out the win with two runs in the fourth for a 2-1 lead and added an insurance run in the eighth.
Scott Jarmakowicz hit a solo home run to left field in the second inning to give Palm Beach Atlantic a 1-0 lead.
Sailfish starter Coleman Farrell held FGCU scoreless for the first three innings. In the fourth, sophomore Mike Cleghorn (Jacksonville, Fla.) reached on a error by shortstop Shelton Stevens to lead off the inning. Senior Jason Louwsma (Sanford, Fla.) doubled down the leftfield line to move Cleghorn to third. Senior Ian Manson followed with an RBI single through the left side to tie the game at 1-1. Louwsma scored on an ensuing double play to make it 2-1 Eagles.
FGCU added an insurance run in the eight inning on a two-out double by freshman Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) to score sophomore Graig Smith (Venice, Fla.), who reached on a fielder’s choice.
The Sailfish cut the lead to one run, 3-2, off Crumbley in the bottom of the eighth when Chelsey Davis lifted a sacrifice fly to right field.
Manson went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead FGCU and extend his current hitting streak to seven games. PBA got a pair of hits each from Kris Wellmaker and James Gladding.
Farrell (2-3) was the hard-luck loser for the Sailfish, allowing just four hits and two earned runs while striking out six in 7.2 innings of work.
FGCU concludes its eight-game road trip with a noon doubleheader on Saturday at Paine College in Augusta, Georgia.
