16th Ranked Baseball Team Cruises to Fifth Straight Win
COLUMBIA, SC- Florida Gulf Coast University scored 31 runs and had 27 hits to sweep a doubleheader from Benedict College, 12-0 and 19-2.
In game one, center fielder Sophomore Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) led off the game with a single, and a stolen base to get FGCU on track. After an error by the Tigers, Sophomore Casey Coleman (Cape Corral, Fla.) drove in Upchurch to take the lead 1-0 in the first. In the second inning the Eagles combined to score seven runs on four hits to go up 8-0 after two. From there Eagles scored three more runs to secure their fourth victory of the season.
The Eagles had three players with multiple hits, including Josh Upchurch who went 2-for-4 with three runs scored, Casey Coleman 3-for-5 with 3 RBI’S, and Senior Derek Mollica (Boca Raton, Fla.) 2-for-4 scoring a pair of runs and driving in three.
Sophomore left-hander Richard Bleier (Davie, Fla.) pitched six shutout innings, allowing three hits, and struck out six to get his first win of the season. In the seventh inning, Derek Shaw (New Port Richie) threw one shutout inning while striking out three.
In the second game, the Eagles pick up where they left off scoring 19 runs on 17 hits. In the second, Junior Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.) drove in three on a triple to right center and later scored on a wild pitch to put the Eagles up 4-0. The Eagles scored five more in the third, and eight more in the seventh to earn their fifth win of the season.
Five players had multiple hits, including Freshmen Chris Alessandria (Jacksonville, Fla.) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored an RBI and Junior Jason Peacock (Bartow, Fla.) 4-for-5 driving in four with three runs scored. Sophomore Richie Sowell (Madison, Fla.) who went 3-for-4 and drove in two while scoring three, and Junior Paul Fibbe (Jacksonville, Fla.) was 2-for-5 with two RBI also added multiple hit games. Borrell was the other Eagle with a multiple hit game went 3-for-5, had three RBI and scored three times.
Senior right-hander Jason Kiley (Palm Harbor, Fla.) pitch five innings allowed four hits, with no earned runs, and struck out seven to improve to 1-1. Junior Tim Bromley (Jacksonville, Fla.) finished game two, throwing two shutout innings, striking out one.
The Eagles stay on the road and head to Augusta, Ga., for a three game series against Paine beginning on February 8th at 4:00 pm.
