Baseball Sweeps #3 Florida Southern
LAKELAND, Fla., - FGCU took two games from Florida Southern, handing the #3 ranked Mocs their first and second losses of the year. FGCU won game one 6-3 and the second game 5-1. The Eagles improved to 9-3 while Florida Southern fell to 9-2.
In game one, FGCU got on the board in the second inning as Vinnie Scarduzzio (Jacksonville, Fla.) led off with a single. After a sacrifice bunt, Scarduzzio scored when Victor Rodriguez (Cape Coral, Fla.), grounded out to second to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
FSC scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Robbie Sheilds led off the inning with a walk, before consecutive hits gave the Mocs a 2-1 lead. A sac fly gave Florida Southern a 3-1 lead.
FGCU responded with a four run sixth inning to take a 5-3 lead. Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) led off the inning with a walk. Jason Peacock (Bartow, Fla.) singled to give the Eagles runners at the corners with one out. Scarduzzio doubled to drive in the first run of the inning. After a groundout RBI by Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.), Rodriguez laced a single up the middle to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead. Rodriguez came home on a single by Derek Mollica (Boca Raton, Fla.). FGCU added an insurance run in the eighth inning to take a 6-3 lead.
Vinnie Scarduzzio led the Eagles, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Stephen Rassell (Lake City, Fla.) and Josh Upchurch each went 2-for-4 for the Eagles. Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.) picked up his first win of the season, going 7.0 innings allowing three runs off of five hits. Luis Pardo (Miami, Fla.) picked up his first save of the year tossing a perfect ninth inning.
In the second game, the Eagles got on the board with four runs in the fifth inning. Mollica started the inning with a single. After a passed ball and a sacrifice bunt, Paul Fibbe (Jacksonville, Fla.), reached on an error. Coleman laced a single up the middle and Jason Peacock (Bartow, Fla.), who spent his freshman season with Florida Southern, delivered the big blow of the game with a three run shot to give FGCU a 4-0 lead. FGCU added a run in the top of the sixth to take a 5-0 lead. Jason Kiley (Palm Harbor, Fla.) worked around a pair of errors in the bottom of the sixth, holding the Mocs to one run in the inning.
Kiley was dominant in the game, going the distance striking out eight batters and limiting the Mocs to five hits in the game. Kiley gave up one run, which was not earned, picking up his second win of the year. Peacock went 1-for-4 with three RBI and a homerun against his former team.
The Eagles will be back in action again next Saturday when they travel to Melbourne, Fla., to face Florida Tech.
