Baseball Rallies to Knock Off Notre Dame
FORT MYERS, Fla., - The #25 FGCU baseball team knocked off Notre Dame 5-3 in front of a school-record 2062 fans on Friday night in the Beef O’Brady’s St. Patrick’s Day Baseball Classic.
The Fighting Irish got on the board first in the third inning with a pair of unearned runs. With two outs, Brett Lilley reached on an error. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, Ryan Smith singled to drive in a pair of runs to give the Irish a 2-0 lead. Notre Dame tacked on a third run in the fourth inning with a Ryan Connolly single to score Dan Dressman.
In the fifth inning, the Eagles got two runs back in the fifth inning. The Irish aided the Eagles with a pair of errors. Jason Peacock (Bartow, Fla.) singled to score Chris Alessandria (Jacksonville, Fla.) cutting the Irish lead to 3-2. The Eagles took the lead for good in the sixth when Josh Upchurch () placed a one-out single to center field. Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.) followed with a triple and scored on a throwing error by the shortstop to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead. FGCU followed up with an insurance run in the eighth. Coleman reached via error to lead off the inning and Alessandria plated the Eagles fifth run with a fielder’s choice grounder to second base to cap the scoring.
FGCU starter Richard Bleier went 6.2 innings to pick up his third win of the year. Bleier allowed three runs, one earned, on seven hits. Pete Woodworth tossed 2.1 innings to pick up his second save of the season. Wade Korpi received the loss for Notre Dame, going 5.1 innings while allowing four runs, one earned, while striking out seven batters. Richie Sowell and Upchurch each went 2-for-3 while Coleman was 2-for-4 on the evening.
The Eagles will be in action again tomorrow night when they face New York Tech at 7:30 pm at Swanson Stadium in the Beef O’Brady’s St. Patrick’s Week Baseball Classic.
The schedule for the tournament was changed due to weather restrictions that prevented Harvard from making the trip. Dayton will now face Notre Dame at 1:00 pm. The Eagles will face New York Tech at 7:30 pm as the only games on the day.
