Spartans take two from the Eagles Baseball
TAMPA, Fla. – After scoring ten runs on Friday night, the #24 ranked Eagles were held to only two runs and drop two games to the University of Tampa, 1-8 and 1-10.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Tampa scored the first runs of the game on Jose Jimenez’s two homerun down the right field line.
Tampa extended their lead to six runs as four Spartans crossed the plate in the fifth.
After eight unanswered runs, the Eagles got on the board in the eighth when Junior Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.) singled to drive in Junior Paul Fibbe (Jacksonville, Fla.).
Junior Luis Pardo (Miami, Fla.) received his first lose of the season (3-1) as he gave up thirteen hits, eight runs, with five strikeouts. Johnny Williams received the win for the Spartans as he gave up only five hits, struck out seven and allowed no runs, while improving his record to (6-0).
In the second game the Eagles once again fell behind as the Spartans took an early lead in the first after Ryan Kennedy reached on a throwing error by Sophomore Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.). Kennedy later scored on an RBI single by Roberto Mena.
The Spartans lead increased in the fourth with three more runs. Chris Rosenbaum doubled down the left field line driving in Roberto Mena. Two batters later, Junior Mejia singled up the middle for another run and Troy Ferguson tripled to left center for the third run as Tampa led 4-0.
The Eagles put up their only run in the fifth, Junior Paul Fibbe (Jacksonville, Fla.) singled to left center and stole second. To pitches later, Sophomore Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) tripled to right center to score Fibbe…
That Spartans didn’t stop there, Tampa scored three more runs in the fifth, and sixth inning to go ahead by ten.
Freshman Pete Woodworth (St. Petersburg, Fla.) threw 4.1 innings giving up six earned runs with four strikeouts while he dropped his record to 2-1. For the Spartans, Kevin Ferguson threw six innings giving up only one run striking out seven batters while he improved his record to 5-2.
The Eagles will be back at home Tuesday at 7:00 pm to face the Lions of Saint Leo University.
