The Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the first as Junior Stephen Rassel (Lake City, Fla.) singled up the middle. Rassel stole third after Chris Alessandria (Jacksonville, Fla.) took first after being hit by a pitch. Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.) drove in Rassel with a grounder and Derek Mollica (Boca Raton, Fla.) doubled to bring in another run for FGCU.
FGCU scored four runs in the fifth to break open a 3-2 game. Borrell reached on a leadoff error and Mollica followed with his second double of the game. The first four batters reached safely as the Eagles scored four runs on five hits in the inning to take a commanding 7-2 lead. Each team would add three more runs for a 10-5 final.
Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.) worked 6.0 innings and allowed a pair of runs to even his record at 2-2 on the year. Graig Smith (Venice, Fla.) went 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles and four RBI in the game. Vinnie Scarduzio (Jupiter, Fla.) and Victor Rodriguez (Cape Coral, Fla.) each went 3-for-4 for FGCU. In game two, Luis Pardo shut down the Saints, cruising to a 7-1 win. Pardo fanned eight batters in 7.0 innings, scattering five hits while allowing one run. The Eagles scored in each of the first three innings, including five in the second to give Pardo a 7-0 lead. Rodriguez singled with one out to start the five run second. After a walk, Rassel tripled to plate a pair of runs. Jason Peacock (Bartow, Fla.) singled to bring home Rassel. Borrell and Scarduzio followed with RBI singles to give the Pardo all the run support he would need.
Borrell, Rassel and Peacock each recorded a pair of hits in the game for FGCU. Flagler’s John Goryl took the loss, allowing seven runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings.
The Eagles will be in action again on Tuesday when they travel to Palm Beach, Fla., to face Palm Beach Atlantic at 6:00 pm.
