Fighting Knights Hold Off Eagles

BOCA RATON, Fla.- The Eagles baseball team dropped game one of the weekend series to the Fighting Knights of Lynn University, 6-5. Sophomore Richard Bleier (Davie, Fla.) received his second loss of the season (6-2), and Knights starting pitcher Nolan Mulligan improved his record to 3-0. The Eagles scored first in the top of the third after junior Jason Peacock (Bartow, Fla.) hit his fifth homerun of the season to right center. The Knights responded in the later half of the inning as they pushed across one run on a groundout to the shortstop by Jason Ten Eyck, to score Steve De La Torre to tie the game at 1-1. The Eagles took the lead in the top of the fifth after junior Vinnie Scarduzio (Jupiter, Fla.) led off the inning with a double to right center. Junior Victor Rodriguez (Cape Coral, Fla.) and sophomore Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.) drew two out walks to load the bases for sophomore Josh Upchurch (Caper Coral, Fla.). With a full count, Upchurch singled through the right side to score Scarduzio and Rodriguez to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead. The Knights countered in the bottom of the fifth to score four runs, on four hits, Rovetto, Arminio, and Holloway recorded one out RBI’s in the innings to give the Fighting Knights a 3-6 lead. For the Eagles in the ninth, Vinnie Scarduzio led off the inning with a single up the middle. Jason Peacock followed with a doubled to left center to score Scarduzio to bring the Eagles within two. After strikeouts by Rodriguez and Coleman, Josh Upchurch singled to the shortstop. With a full count and two outs, Stephen Rassel (Lake City, Fla.) reached on an error by the second baseman that scored Peacock. Derek Mollica stepped up to the plate for the Eagles; a native of Boca Raton, Fla. took the first pitch for a ball. The next pitch, Mollica flied out to left field to conclude the game. Richard Bleier received his second lose after he threw 4.1 innings, allowing seven hits, six runs with four strikeouts. Upchurch was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Scarduzio was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Peacock was 2-for-4 with two RBI, and two runs scored. The Eagles will be back at Lynn to finish the weekend series with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 12:00 pm.
