Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Lynn
BOCA RATON, Fla. - Kyle Holloway hit the game-tying home run and Nicolas Boisvert the walk-off grand slam as the Lynn University baseball team split its Saturday double-header with Florida Gulf Cost 4-5, 8-4. Boisvert went 6-for-8 with two home runs and six RBI while Joe Arminio extended his hitting streak to 15 games. The Eagles now stand at 32-14 while Lynn moves to 30-18 overall.
The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the second inning as Jason Peacock drilled a homer over the right filed wall. FGCU added a pair of runs in the fifth on a single by Stephen Rassel and a sacrifice fly by Derek Mollica. The Knights added a run in the sixth with a solo homer by Jason Ten Eyck to set up the dramatic seventh inning. Holloway stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and his team trailing 4-3. The Deerfield Beach, Fla., product then smacked a solo home run to right field to tie the game.
A single by Ryan Sharman immediately following Holloway's heroics signaled the end of the day for starter Luis Pardo (5-3). Reliever Pete Woodworth did not fare well though. He walked the first batter he faced, Steve De La Torre, and then hit Chad Crowe after getting ahead in the count to load the bases. Boisvert swung and missed on fastball to go down 1-2 in the count but connected on the next pitch, crushing a grand slam over the right center field wall to win the game 8-4.
Snow pitched seven innings for his second consecutive complete game and third overall this year. He allowed seven hits, four runs, three earned runs while striking out two. He improves to 7-2.
FGCU nearly gave away the first game of the double-header as well. The Eagles trailed 1-0 after a first inning RBI single by Dan Rovetto but scored single runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-1 lead. The Eagles added a pair in the fourth. Chris Alessandria drew a one out walk and Josh Upchurch added a single. Singles by Stephen Rassel and Ozzie Borrell scored the two, giving the Eagles a 4-1 lead.
The Knights added a run in the sixth off a Boisvert home run but gave the run back in the seventh on Derek Mollica's solo shot, making it 5-2. Closer J.J. Crumbley relieved starter Casey Coleman in the ninth and struck out two of the first three batters he faced, surrendering a single to Jason Ten Eyck.
Arminio stepped to the plate and pushed the count to 3-2 before fouling off the next four pitches. The junior first baseman launched a two-run home run over the left field fence on the 10th pitch, bringing the Knights to within one run. LU couldn't continue the rally, with the final batter popping out to third base.
The Eagles and Knights will square off on Tuesday at Swanson Stadium at 6:00 pm concluding the four game set.
