Baseball Blasts FIU 13-1
MIAMI- Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.) helped spark a 13-1 route of Florida International by going 5-for-6 with a pair of doubles, a homerun and four RBI while Pete Woodworth (St. Petersburg, Fla.) picked up the win, going 7.0 innings with six strikeouts.
FGCU took a 4-0 lead in the fourth. Vinnie Scarduzio (Jupiter, Fla.) led off with a single and scored on a double by Paul Fibbe (Jacksonville, Fla.). Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.) and Stephen Wickens (Whitby, Ontario) followed with singles before a sacrifice fly by Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.). The Eagles would bat around in the inning.
The Eagles would continue to add to the lead, getting homers by Borrell, Coleman and Upchurch as they pounded out 18 hits while scoring 13 runs. Upchurch was 3-for-4 with a two-run blast as well as a stolen base. Coleman was a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored and his first homerun of the season. Scarduzio and Wickens were each 2-for-5 on the night as well.
While the Eagles offense clicked, Woodworth was impressive on the mound, tossing 6.0 innings, while allowing a pair of hits. J.J. Crumbley (Tampa, Fla.) and Chris Sale (Lakeland, Fla.) continued to stymie the Golden Panthers, combining to go 3.0 innings with four strikeouts while surrendering just one walk. The two hits were the fewest the Panthers had recorded since the 2005 season. FIU came into the game averaging over eight runs per game offensively.
The Eagles will be back in action again on Saturday when they host UNF in their first conference series. UNF comes in with a 2-1 record. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
