Eagles Rally in the Ninth to Top IPFW
BRADENTON, Fla. – Senior Jason Peacock (Bartow, Fla.) kept his 15-game hit streak alive with a two-run double in the ninth that gave the Eagles a 7-6 victory at Wynn Field on the campus of Manatee Community College on Wednesday night. The Eagles improve their record to 12-3, continuing their best start in school history. With the loss the Mastodons fall to 1-10-1 on the season.
Senior J.J. Crumbley (Tampa, Fla.) picked up his second win throwing one and a third, allowing no runs, one hit and striking out one.
The Mastodons were the first to score in the bottom of the fourth, putting up two after back-to-back singles.
The Eagles would respond in the top of the fifth as senior Victor Rodriguez (Cape Coral, Fla.) hit a two-run homerun to right center that brought home classmate Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.). Rodriguez finished the night 2-for-4 with two runs scored to go along with his two RBI’s.
The Eagles would add two in the top of the seventh after junior Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) singled through the right side to score Rodriguez. Two pitches later, freshman Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla.) singled up the middle to score Stephen Wickens (Whitby, Ontario) who reached on a fielding error by the shortstop.
The Eagles would add to their lead when Stephen Rassel (Lake City, Fla.) doubled to left center to lead off the eighth. Rassel would later score on a sac fly by Borrell to give the Eagles a 5-2 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Mastodons would bat around and add four to put the Eagles behind by one heading into the top of the ninth.
Wickens led off the ninth with his second single of the game. Upchurch moved Wickens over with a sac bunt. Alvarez walked on five pitches, then Peacock one-hopped the left center wall to bring home Wickens and Alvarez to give the Eagles a 7-6 lead that would hold after Crumbley came back for the ninth to retire the first three batters on the inning.
The Eagles will be back on Friday at 6:00 pm to face A-Sun foe Kennesaw State for a three-game series in Kennesaw, Ga.
