Baseball Drops Game to Florida International
FORT MYERS, Fla., - The FGCU baseball team dropped their third straight to fall to 25-10 after a 4-3 loss to Florida International on Wednesday night. FIU improves to 12-23 with the win. The two teams will meet again on May 6, the Eagles next home game.
FIU jumped on the Eagles early as Corey Lozano led off the game with a homerun on the first pitch he saw. Two batters Jorge Castillo extended his hitting streak to 30 games and later scored on a sacrifice fly. The Panthers added a third run in the inning on a single from Ryan Mollica.
The Eagles got one run back in the second inning as Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.) scored on a balk. The game would remain scoreless until the seventh where FIU scored a run to go up 4-1. FIU starter Jorge Ramos limited the Eagles to four hits in 7.0 innings as he worked into the eighth and struck out four batters while giving up a pair of runs, one earned. The FGCU bullpen was equally as good, going 8.0 innings with six strikeouts while allowing one unearned run.
The Eagles scored a run in the eighth, as Stephen Wickens (Whitby, Ontario) led off with a walk and scored on a single down the line by Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla.). Alvarez extended his school-record hitting streak to 21 games with the RBI single.
The Eagles made things interesting in the ninth as Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.) drew a one-out walk and scored on a passed ball. Wickens singled to give the Eagles runners at the corners with a pair of outs before the Panthers closed out the game.
Jorge Castillo was 3-4 with a run scored and an RBI in the game while Corey Lozano was 2-5 with a homer and a pair of runs scored. Ramos picked up the win to improve to 2-3 on the season.
Casey Coleman was 2-3 for the Eagles with a run scored. Jason Peacock also singled as did Josh Upchurch. Patrick Nathanson received the loss for the Eagles, falling to 0-3 on the season.
The Eagles look to snap out of their three-game skid on Friday as they begin a three-game Atlantic Sun series with Lipscomb.
