Baseball Takes Two from Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team took two from A-Sun foe Jacksonville on Saturday afternoon at John Sessions Stadium, 5-1, and 4-1. Junior Lefthander Richard Bleier struck out a career high in game one to improve his record to 6-0, while junior Casey Coleman earned his fifth win of the season in game two. Jacksonville falls to 22-17, 11-12 A-Sun, and the Eagles improve to 28-12, 18-5 A-Sun.
In game one, Richard Bleier (Davie, Fla.) earned the win after throwing a complete game, allowing only one run (unearned) on six hits with two walks, and a career high 11 strikeouts.
Senior Matt Dobbins (4-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts in six innings.
The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third when Senior Peacock (Bartow, Fla.) hit a two-run homer to left center field with two outs.
FGCU increased their lead to 3-0 in the top of the fifth when junior Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) scored from third on a wild pitch.
The Eagles made it 5-0 in the top of the sixth when Upchurch hit a two-run single to center with two outs and the bases loaded.
Senior Stephen Rassel (Lake City, Fla.) finished game one going 3-for-5 with a run scored.
In game two, Casey Coleman (5-2) earned the win after allowing one unearned run on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts in seven innings. Chris Sale notched his second save of the year by hurling two shutout innings to close the game.
Freshman Matt Loosen (4-2) was received the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits with five walks and two strikeouts in five innings.
The Dolphins jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Dobbins hit an RBI single with two outs.
The Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth when senior Vinnie Scarduzio (Jupiter, Fla.) hit a two-run homer to right center with two outs.
FGCU increased the margin to 3-1 in the top of the fifth when senior Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.) hit a sacrifice fly to center to score freshman Stephen Wickens (Whitby, Ontario) who reached on a single through the left side.
The Eagles made it 4-1 in the top of the seventh when Borrell hit an RBI single through the left side with two outs.
The Eagles and the Dolphins will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday April 19 at 12 p.m. to play the series finale at John Sessions Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.
