FGCU Completes Sweep of Campbell
FORT MYERS, Fla. – One night after using a barrage of hits to score 30 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Campbell, the Eagles’ pitchers allowed just two runs as they finished off a three-game sweep of the Fighting Camels in FGCU’s first A-Sun series of the season.
With one out in the bottom of the first, the Eagles offense picked up right where it left off the night before. Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) drove a double through the left center gap and scored two pitches later on a Tim Roberson (West Palm Beach, Fla.) line drive RBI up the middle. Campbell would quickly tie the score in the top of the second after a successful hit and run by Chris Bangi (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Ellis Lowe (San Diego, Calif.).
Once again the Eagle bats would come up big regaining the lead in the second inning. Zach Maxfield (North Port, Fla.) drove a single back up the middle, and would eventually score on a groundball to second. Stephen Wickens (Whitby, Ontario) would hit a sacrifice fly to left to add another run, giving FGCU a 3-1 lead after two innings.
Wickens reached base on an error to lead off the Eagles half of the fifth inning. After an Upchurch strikeout, Roberson singled to left putting runners on first and second with one out. Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla.) would drive in Wickens from second with an RBI single to left field, putting the Eagles out in front 4-1 after five innings of play.
Maxfield, who was the offensive hero in Friday’s doubleheader, would single for the Eagles in the bottom half of the eighth, finishing the weekend 12-for-13, good for a .923 batting average. He also recorded two doubles, two home runs, eight runs scored, and eight runs driven in.
Richie Erath (West Palm Beach, Fla.) evened his record at 1-1, hurling six innings of one-run baseball, scattering eight hits and walking one while striking out five. Nathanson threw three innings, allowing a run on three hits with six K’s, picking up his first save of the year.
The Eagles will be back in action as they play host to the Nittany Lions of Penn State next week, Tuesday at 6 p.m. and Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Swanson Stadium.
