Baseball Falls to Bethune-Cookman, 10-4
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team fell to Bethune-Cookman, 10-4, Tuesday night at the Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
The Eagles fall to 14-13 overall, and the Wildcats improve to 12-14 after the 10-4 win.
Craig Crumbly (Winter Haven, Fla.) was charged with the loss, Crumbly (2-1) went four full innings allowed seven hits, three earned runs, and struck out five Wildcats.
Felix Machado improved his record to 4-1, striking out three Eagles and gave up seven hits in six innings.
The Eagles got on the board early, leadoff hitter Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) singled up the middle followed by a three-base error charged to the centerfielder, Upchurch scored to put the Eagles up 1-0.
The Wildcats would answer back in the bottom half of the first with one of their own to tie the game at one.
The Wildcats would take the lead in the bottom of the third on a home run by Mark Brooks to right center.
The Wildcats added to their lead in the four with three straight singles to put the Eagles behind, 3-1 after four.
The Wildcats would get four more in the fifth before the Eagles could put across some runs in the top of the sixth. The Eagles plated two runs in the sixth on a two-run home run to left field by Zach Maxfield (North Port, Fla.) to cut the deficit to 7-3.
The Wildcats answered with five hits, three of those extra base hits in the bottom of the sixth to push across four more runs, and increase their to 10-3.
The Eagles would come up short and only scored one more run in the eighth on another home run by Maxfield, his eighth of the season. Maxfield now leads the team in hitting with a .373 batting average.
Three Eagles recorded a multiple hit game, Tim Roberson (West Palm Beach, Fla.) went 3-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI, Robert Greene (Cape Coral, Fla.) went 2-for-3, and Maxfield finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two home runs and three RBI.
The Eagles will be back in action to finish the two-game series tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. at the Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach, Fla.
