Baseball Takes Game Two from Bethune-Cookman, 3-2
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team took game two of the two-game mid-week series from Bethune-Cookman 3-2, courtesy of a two run home run by Zach Maxfield.
The Eagles improve to 15-13, while the Wildcats fall to 12-15 on season.
Richie Erath (West Palm Beach, Fla.) came in relief to earn the win. Erath (4-2) threw one inning, gave up no hits and allowed no runs.
The Wildcats took an early lead, scoring one in the second. The Wildcats added another run in the third after a one-out double followed by an RBI single.
The Eagles would finally get on the board in the seventh, through six innings the Eagles only had two hits. Tim Roberson (West Palm Beach, Fla.) doubled to center with one out to bring up Zach Maxfield (North Port, Fla.). Maxfield hit one deep the left field that would leave the park to tie the game at two.
In the top of the ninth, Roberson leadoff the inning with a single to right field. Maxfield drew a walk, and Robert Greene (Cape Coral, Fla.) laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached on a throwing error by the Wildcats pitcher that scored Roberson to give the Eagles their only lead of the game.
Chris Sale (Lakeland, Fla.) came in the bottom of ninth to close it out for the Eagles. Sale only allowed one Wildcat to reach base, to earn his first save of the year.
Roberson collected three hits, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and Maxfield drove two RBI, going 1-for-3 on the day.
The Eagles travel up to Macon, Ga. to face A-Sun foe Mercer for a three-game conference series beginning on Friday at 6:00 p.m. Game two is scheduled for Saturday at 4:00 p.m., and the series concludes on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
