Baseball Sweeps Season Series With FAU
BOCA RATON, Fla. – After four lead changes, and 16 pitchers by both squads, the FGCU baseball team won their 34th win of the season as they scored late to win 8-7 over FAU on Tuesday night at the FAU Stadium.
The Eagles outhit the Owls 14-11 to improve their record to 34-17, and the Owls fall to 27-23 on the season. The Eagles are now 4-0 all-time against the Owls, sweeping the two-game series for the second straight year.
The Eagles used six pitchers on the night with Craig Crumbly (Winter Haven, Fla.) earning the win. Crumbly improved his record to 7-3 on the season. Crumbly threw one inning, allowed four hits and two runs.
The Owls used 10 pitchers on the night with Alex Pepe receiving the loss. Pepe (3-1) did not record an out, and allowed one run.
The Owls opened up the scoring in the first. David Wilson singled up the middle to lead off the bottom half of the first inning. After a throwing error by FGCU starting pitcher Ryan Horton (Orlando, Fla.) advanced Wilson to third, Jeremy Griffitns flew out to center to Wilson.
The Eagles would take their first lead of the game as Zach Maxfield (North Port, Fla.) leadoff the second inning with his 19th home run to left center. The Eagles would plate another run in the inning as Brad Roberts (Tampa, Fla.) singled to left field with two out, and Robert Greene (Cape Coral, Fla.) drove in Roberts on a double to left field to put the Eagles ahead 2-1.
The Owls regained the lead in the third on a two-out, two RBI double by Tom Hatcher.
The Owls added two more in the fifth on a two run home run by Wilson, his sixth home run of the season. After five innings of play, the Eagles trailed 5-2.
The Eagles took their second lead of the game after Maxfield added his A-Sun leading 20th home run in the sixth with one out. Josh Chester (Weston, Fla.) followed Maxfield’s home run with a single up the middle to extend his hit streak to 24-games, the longest in FGCU history. Stephen Wickens (Whitby, Ontario) reached base on a hit-by-pitch, and Roberts cleared the bases with his sixth home run of the season to put the Eagles up 6-5.
The Eagles loaded the bases in the eighth after a single by Wickens, a double by Roberts, and hit-by-pitch by Greene. Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) stepped up the plate and drew a walk on four straight pitches to increase the Eagles lead to 7-5.
Trailing by two, Griffiths leadoff the Owls eighth inning with a single up the middle. Three pitches later, the Owls tied the game on a home run by Hatcher.
Tied at seven, the Eagles loaded the bases once again in the top of the ninth to bring up Greene. Greene ran the count full, and drew a walk to score Chester.
With a one run lead in the bottom of the ninth, senior Derek Shaw (New Port Richey, Fla.) was able to get his sixth save of the season as the Eagles went on to win 8-7.
Four Eagles recorded multiple hits. Upchurch went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Maxfield went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and two RBI on two home runs. Wickens also went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Roberts went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI.
The Eagles look to win another A-Sun regular season title as they host Stetson for a three-game series beginning on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Game two is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Friday, and the series concludes on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Eagles only need to win one game in the series to win their second straight A-Sun regular season title.
