Eagles Set to Host Owls in Weekend Series

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU Baseball team is set to host their first Atlantic Sun Conference series of the season as the defending A-Sun Champions will battle conference foe Kennesaw State in a three-game set this weekend at Swanson Stadium.

Kennesaw State (9-14 overall, 1-2 A-Sun) comes into the matchup on a three-game losing streak, including a 19-9 loss at Georgia State on March 24. Ronnie Freeman leads KSU with a .315 batting average and is second on the club in RBI (18), doubles (five) and homers (three). Tyler Stubblefield is another big bat in the Owls lineup. Stubblefield is currently hitting .295 with six homeruns and 16 RBI.

Through the first 19 games, FGCU holds a .352 team batting average with all starters hitting above .296. The team is led by A-Sun Preseason Player of the Year Zach Maxfield’s .435 average with 20 RBI, 17 runs scored, and two home runs. Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla.) is second on the squad with a .398 average to go with his 19 RBI, 21 runs, and two home runs. Tim Roberson (West Palm Beach, Fla.), FGCU’s leader in homers (4), and Stephen Wickens (Whitby, Ontario, Canada) have combined for 44 runs, drove in 37, and are hitting .373 and .380 respectively. The Blue and Green have outscored their opponents 178-117 thus far and have a pitching staff that has struck out 178 batters while walking 72.

FGCU’s Chris Sale (Lakeland, Fla.) is scheduled to be on the hill for the Eagles in game one of the series, which will be his sixth start and sixth appearance on the year. The lefty has given up 22 hits over 26.0 innings, with a conference-high 40 K’s and four walks.

Following the opening contest on Friday, March 26 (6:30 p.m.), the Eagles and Owls meet again on Saturday for an afternoon double-header with games scheduled for a 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. first pitch, respectively.
