Baseball Set to Host FAU in Non-Conference Contest
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team will face FAU on Tuesday, April 20 at Swanson Stadium. The matchup, which will be the first contest of a home-and-home series with the Owls, is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
The contest with FAU marks the first of two meetings between the schools this season and the fifth meeting all-time (FGCU leads the all-time series 4-0). The teams last met on May 12, 2009 in a contest that saw four lead changes and 16 total pitchers. The Eagles, who outhit the Owls 14-11, scored late to win 8-7 over FAU at the FAU Stadium and pick up their 34th win of the season.
The Eagles (23-12, 14-4 A-Sun) enter the matchup having won seven of their last nine games, including taking two of three from Lipscomb last week. FAU, who has won four consecutive contests, comes into the weekend with a 22-14 overall mark (12-6 Sun Belt).
Through 35 games, FGCU holds a .339 team batting average with nine players hitting above .327. The team is led by A-Sun Preseason Player of the Year Zach Maxfield’s (North Port, Fla.) .408 average with 32 RBI, 31 runs scored, and five home runs. Stephen Wickens (Whitby, Ontario, Canada) is second on the squad with a .375 average to go with his 25 RBI, 36 runs, and 13 stolen bases. Tim Roberson (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Luke Smierciak (Gainesville, Fla.), FGCU’s leaders in homers (7), have combined for 77 runs, 69 RBI, and are hitting .327 and .359, respectively. The Blue and Green have outscored their opponents 302-215 thus far and have a pitching staff that has an ERA of 5.47 and struck out 289 batters while walking 119.
The Owls, led by head coach John McCormack, come into the Tuesday matchup with a team batting average of .308 and have outscored their opponents 244-201 . Dan Scheffler leads FAU’s offensive attack with his .415 bating average, 45 RBI, 15 doubles, and 11 home runs. The junior has also posted a .541 on base percentage and a .837 slugging percentage. The Owls pitching staff has an ERA of 5.05 and holds opponents hitters to a .282 batting average.
