FORT MYERS, Fla. - FGCU junior Chris Sale earned a pair of Player of the Week honors for his effort in the Blue and Green’s 1-0 win over Belmont last week. Sale was named Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Week and was one of seven ‘Louisville Slugger’ National Players of the Week.
The A-Sun Preseason Pitcher of the Year, Sale (Lakeland, Fla.) set a new FGCU record with 15 strikeouts in a complete game one-hitter to lead the Eagles past Belmont, 1-0, on Friday, April 23 at Swanson Stadium.
Sale controlled the mound throughout the nine inning performance, allowing no runs to come across the plate on one hit while registering a record setting 15 strikeouts with only one walk. The junior lefty has already had two 14-strikeout performances this season, which placed him in a tie for the previous record with Chris Hassen (at Lock Haven, 3/14/2003). With the win, the Eagle ace’s record moved to 6-0 on the season with a team-leading 93 strikeouts and team-low nine walks.
Sale currently leads the A-Sun in strikeouts and ERA (2.14).
"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
- RHP Matt Harvey, North Carolina: Harvey struck out a career-high 15 Clemson batters during a 5-3 win. He struck out the side three times, including six punch-outs in a row in the sixth and seventh innings.
LHP Chris Sale, Florida Gulf Coast: Sale set a new school record with 15 strikeouts in a complete game 1-hitter as he led the Eagles past Belmont, 1-0. He gave up only one walk.
RHP Kendall Lewis, Eastern Michigan: Lewis pitched an 11-inning complete game, 1-0 win over Western Michigan. He threw 138 pitches and gave up three hits, one walk and struck out a career-high 10 batters.
1B Jake Magner, North Dakota: Magner had a remarkable doubleheader against New York Tech. as he belted 6 home runs and knocked in 13 runs, going 7-for-10 at the plate with 7 runs scored over those two games. For the 3-game series against NYIT, Magner hit .556 (10-for-18), scored 10 runs, hit 6 homers and drove in 14 runs.
- 1B Jordan Ribera, Fresno St.: Ribera hit 5 home runs with 9 RBIs over four games last week as he scored 7 runs and went 10-for-16 at the plate (.625). He also had 2 doubles and accounted for 27 total bases.
RHP Justin Topa, Long Island: Topa took a perfect game into the fifth inning en route to throwing a complete game 1-hitter during in a 2-0 win over Monmouth. Topa struck out a season-high 12 batters.
RHP Christian Bergman, U.C. Irvine: Bergman had a near-perfect performance against U.C. Davis, facing the minimum in a 1-hit complete game shutout, 13-0. After giving up a leadoff hit in the bottom of the first to Daniel Cepin, Bergman went on to retire the next 26 batters he faced (Cepin would be caught stealing). Bergman used just 89 pitches in the 9-inning effort. He struck out six.
