No. 24 Clemson Claims Final Game with Eagles, 14-2
CLEMSON, S.C. – The FGCU baseball team faced defeat in the final contest of a four game series with No. 24 Clemson, 14-2, on Tuesday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson, S.C. Junior Tim Roberson (West Palm Beach, Fla.) went 2-for-4 with a home run in the series finale.
With the loss, the Eagles drop to 28-16 overall (17-4 A-Sun) and No. 24 Clemson improved to 28-17 on the year (11-10 ACC).
FGCU used five arms to get through the eight innings of work. Junior lefty Patrick Nathanson (Maitland, Fla.) (4-3) started the evening on the hill and went 1.2 innings, allowing seven earned runs on five hits and five walks in the losing effort. Jason Forjet (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), Kevin Bryant (Homestead, Fla.), Jacob Barnes (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Craig Crumbly (Winter Haven, Fla.) also saw action in the contest, allowing a combined seven runs (six earned) on ten hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Clemson started Alex Frederick (3-1), who went five innings and allowed two runs (one earned) in the winning effort.
The Eagles took a quick one-run lead in the top of the first inning. Junior second baseman Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla.) was able to score from third on a sacrifice fly to left center by senior Josh Chester (Weston, Fla.) (1-0).
The Tigers exploded for a seven-run second inning on a five hits, highlighted by a grand slam from Mike Freeman (7-1).
The top of the fifth frame saw the Blue and Green plate their final run of the contest. Roberson stepped to the batter’s box with one out in the inning, and sent a 1-0 pitch deep down the left field line for his team-leading 10th round tripper of the year (7-2).
Clemson would double their total over their final four chances at the plate while holding the Eagles scoreless, as they went on to the 14-2 victory.
In the final contest, FGCU moved two runs home on six hits and were led by the 2-for-4 game of Roberson. Alvarez went 1-for-4 with a run scored and Chester batted 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Clemson moved 14 runs across the dish on 15 hits in the game.
Through the four game series, Alvarez led the way offensively going 9-for-18 (.500) with five runs scored and an RBI. Recording two home runs, Roberson went 6-for-14 with three runs scored while plating three RBI. Chester held a .462 average (6-for-13) with four RBI, while Joe Guarnaccia (Weston, Fla.) and Alex Lozada (Estero, Fla.) each batted 4-for-12 (.333) and scored a run apiece. Additionally, Zach Maxfield (North Port, Fla.) and Luke Smierciak (Gainesville, Fla.) connected for a home run and combined for six RBI.
The Eagles land back at home for a three game A-Sun Conference series with the ETSU Buccaneers. First pitch of Saturday’ s doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. and the final contest is set for Sunday, also at 1 p.m.
