Maxfield and Roberson Power Eagles Past Owls, 8-5
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU baseball team picked up a big non-conference road win as they defeated the Owls of FAU, 8-5, on Tuesday evening at the FAU Baseball Stadium.
With the win, the Eagles move to 32-16 on the year and FAU’s record falls to 31-18 overall. The win also gives the Blue and Green a 5-1 lead in the all-time series with the Owls.
Sophomore Jacob Barnes (St. Petersburg, Fla.) got the start for the Eagles, pitching 2.0 innings and giving up three runs (all earned) on five hits. Redshirt sophomore Patrick Nathanson (Maitland, Fla.) got the win for FGCU. The lefty (5-3) threw six complete innings in relief, allowed two runs on four hits, while striking out eight. Junior Chris Sale (Lakeland, Fla.) entered in the ninth and retired the Owls on seven pitches to pick up his second save of the season.
Hugh Adams received the loss for FAU. Adams (3-4) gave up four runs (four earned) on five hits in 1.0 inning of work.
The Owls jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead through the first two innings. FAU’s three runs came off of five hits, including three singles and a pair of home runs.
The Eagles exploded for four runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. FGCU scored their four runs on three hits (two singles and one double). Luke Smierciak (Gainesville, Fla.) doubled, while Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Tim Roberson (West Palm Beach, Fla.) both singled in the frame.
After the Owls were able to push a run across in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the contest at 4-4, the Blue and Green added another 4-spot in the visitor’s half of the fifth (8-4). Alvarez singled to center field and was brought in to score after Roberson sent a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left center field for his 13th homer of the season (6-4). After a Josh Chester (Weston, Fla.) single to right field, Zach Maxfield (North Port, Fla.) stepped into the box and launched a 0-1 pitch out of the park to give the Eagles a 8-4 lead. The home run was Maxfield’s eighth of the season.
FAU would put up another run in the bottom of the fifth. With a runner on second, Eddie Cassidy slapped an RBI single to center field (8-5).
Both teams would be held scoreless over the final four innings of the game as the Eagles picked up their 32nd win of the season.
For the game, the Eagles got eight runs on 13 hits and were led offensively by Roberson and Maxfield. Roberson finished 2-for-5 with a homer, two runs scored and a pair of RBI. Maxfield went 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.
The A-Sun leading Eagles will be back in action on Friday, May 14th for game one of a 3-game weekend series with the Jacksonville Dolphins in Jacksonville, Fla. First pitch for Friday’s matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the doubleheader on Saturday is set for a 1 p.m. start. With a win or a loss by the UNF Ospreys this weekend, FGCU will secure their third consecutive A-Sun Regular Season Title.
