Eagles Look To Pick Up Third A-Sun Regular Season Title This Weekend

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU Baseball team looks to secure its third consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference Regular Season Championship as they travel to Jacksonville, Fla. to face the Jacksonville Dolphins in a three-game set this weekend.

The Eagles (32-16, 20-4 A-Sun) enter the contest ranked first in the Atlantic Sun standings after a 3-game series sweep over ETSU last week. JU, who has lost six of their last seven games, comes into the matchup with a 22-23 overall record (11-9 A-Sun).

Through 48 games, FGCU holds a .334 team batting average with eight players hitting above .300. The team is led Mikel Alvarez’s (West Palm Beach, Fla.) .393 average with 14 doubles, 50 runs scored, three home runs, and 32 RBI. Zach Maxfield (North Port, Fla.) is second on the squad with a .374 average to go with his 46 RBI, 44 runs, and eight homers. Tim Roberson (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Luke Smierciak (Gainesville, Fla.) have combined for 96 runs, 100 RBI, and are hitting .330 and .328, respectively. The Blue and Green have outscored their opponents 393-286 thus far and have a pitching staff that has an ERA of 5.29 and struck out 404 batters while walking 289.

The Dolphins, led by head coach Terry Alexander, have a team batting average of .310 and have outscored their opponents 358-335. Dan Gulbransen leads Jacksonville with a .408 batting average, while Adam Bret Walker’s power leads JU’s offensive attack with his .342 batting average, 49 RBI, 12 doubles, and 14 home runs. Walker has also posted a .429 on-base percentage and a .684 slugging percentage. The Dolphins pitching staff has an ERA of 6.18 and opposing hitters hit .312 against them.

Following the series opening game on Friday, May 14 (7 p.m.), the Eagles and Dolphins meet again on Saturday (May 15) for an afternoon doubleheader that is set to start at 1 p.m.
